The 2.5 m scope is used for the famous Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), the 3.5m belongs to the Astrophysical Research Consortium.
Apache Point´s grounds are open to the public in daylight hours but there are no tours offered, so one cannot see the telescopes. However, the site is interesting to see and a small free brochure explains the research projects of the APO.
The mountains are in a very natural area with virtually no civilization (it is in the Lincoln National Forest). Therefore, encounters with wildlife is frequent. A deer along the road didn´t seem to be too shy to be fotographed, a squirrel was just quick enough.
After a short stay at the APO I headed back to Cloudcroft, which is a beautiful small village (actually it is a city but is has only 750 residents) with a stunning downtown. When establishing Cloudcroft it was assumed, that it would be visited by tourists because of the nice area. And this is as true as can get. However, it didn´t look as overcrowded as other places I´ve been at.

Nur wenige Kilometer vom Sacramento Peak liegt das Apache Point Observatory (APO). Es ist der dunkle Platz des Berges und beherbergt unter anderem ein 3,5 m, ein 2,5 m und ein 1,0 m Teleskop.
Das 2,5 m Teleskop wird für den Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) verwendet, das 3,5 m Teleskop gehört zum Astrophysikalischen Forschungskonsortium. Der Platz ist während Tageslicht für die Öffentlichkeit zugänglich, allerdings werden keine Touren angeboten, daher kann man die Teleskope nicht sehen. Trotzdem ist es interessant, den Ort zu sehen. Eine kleine Broschüre beschreibt die Forschungsprojekte am APO.
Die Berge sind in einer sehr natürlichen Umgebung mit praktisch keiner Zivilisation (sie befinden sich im Licoln National Forest). Deswegen sind Begegnungen mit wilden Tieren häufig. Ein Reh an der Straßenseite schien nicht zu scheu zu sein um fotografiert zu werden, ein Eichhörnchen war gerade schnell genug.
Nach einem kurzen Aufenthalt am APO fuhr ich zurück nach Cloudcroft, das ein schönes Dörchen mit einer atemraubenden "Innenstadt" ist (um genau zu sein handelt es sich um eine Stadt, aber sie hat nur 750 Einwohner). Als Cloudcroft gegründet wurde, wurde angenommen, daß es von vielen Touristen besucht würde, da die Umgebung so schön ist. Und genau das ist eingetroffen. Allerdings sah es nicht so überlaufen aus wie andere Plätze an denen ich schon war.
