Return to Kitt Peak / Rückkehr zum Kitt Peak

Ever wondered who is the person that polishes the 8.4m mirrors? Well, when studying optics at the University of Arizona or being a member of the TAAA (Tucson Amateur Astronomy Association) you have the chance to meet him.
On 21st of August, optical sciences students pilgrimed to Kitt Peak in order to socialize, listen to a presentation about the manufacture of the big mirrors and - depending on the weather - to observe.
The evening started early for me - I was the first to arrive at the picnic area of Kitt Peak. Since nobody else was there, I drove the remaining 3 km to the summit and browsed through the Kitt Peak gift shop. On the way uphill, I met Dean Ketelsen - the guy who is polishing the giants. Some time later, the two of us were chatting on the picnic area when it increasingly got crowded. Finally the students arrived - along with tons of Mexican food. After doing that job, we all listened to a wonderful presentation from Dean. The first half of it was dedicated to his professional work at the UoA mirror lab. Here, the world´s largest monolithic mirrors are being cast, grinded and polished. Two of those gigantic mirrors are used for the Large Binocular Telescope, another seven are needed for the Giant Magellan Telescope and another one with an unusual shape for the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope.
The second half of this stunning presentation addressed to Dean´s leisure work - taking breathtaking astroimages. You could hear lots of "ahhhs" and "ohhhs" among the crowd (we guessed that around 60 people attended). Since it was raining the following star party had to becancelled. Still, it was a great evening.
