Biosphere 2

Roughly an 80 minutes drive from my current home Biosphere 2 is located north from Oro Valley.
It was built in the late 1980s to simulate a self-sustaining ecosystem. Two main experiments have been conducted. Both of them did not succeed in the way planned for several reasons. The main problems were that the level of oxygen decreased dramatically and that the crew went low-caloric, resulting in an average weight loss of around 15% in the first year.
However, from a scientific point of view, the data gathered were useful and help understand Biosphere 1 - our Earth.

Biosphere 2 simulates five different biomes: savannah, ocean, rain forest, mangrove and desert. In a guided tour, one can walk through all of these biomes and get some insight into the techniques used, the way the crews managed to survive for several months.

Biosphere 2 has been dedicated one of the 50 "Must See Wonders of the World" by Time Life Books - a conclusion I can fully agree with.

Biosphere 2 liegt etwa 80 Autominuten von meinem derzeitigen Zuhause nördlich von Oro Valley.

Es wurde in den späten 1980er Jahren errichtet um ein selbsterhaltendes Ökosystem zu simulieren. Zwei Hauptexperimente wurden durchgeführt. Beide waren aufgrund verschiedener Gründe nicht erfolgreich in dem Sinne wie geplant. Die Hauptprobleme waren, daß der Sauerstoffpegel dramatisch absank und die Crew unterernährt wurde, was zu einer Gewichtsabnahme von durchschnittlich etwa 15% im ersten Jahr geführt hat.
Trotzdem waren die gesammelten Daten vom wissenschaftlichen Standpunkt aus gesehen nützlich, die Biosphere 1 zu verstehen - unsere Erde.

Biosphere 2 simuliert fünf verschiedene Biome: Savanne, Ozean, Regenwald, Mangrove und Wüste. In einer geführten Tour kann man durch alle Biome hindurchgehen und bekommt ein paar Einsichten in die genutzten Techniken und wie die Crew es geschafft hat für mehrere Monate zu überleben.

Biosphere 2 wurde von Time Life Books als eines der 50 "Muss-man-gesehen-haben-Wunder der Welt" gekürt.
