In May 2012, my wife Nicole and I visited the United States and I showed her plenty of fascinating places in Arizona and the adjacent states. We fell in love with the natural beauty of the cacti in the Saguaro National Park and the impressive scenery at Monument Valley and we were thrilled by the amazing arches in Arches National Park. Of course, there are countless more examples of beautiful places.
We wanted to bring those memories back to live by having a wall tattoo with the three mentioned places. There are a couple of good websites in the internet, but we looked for this special subjects to no avail. Furthermore, we were not sure whether or not a wall tattoo would stick to our walls permanently as we already encountered troubles with other stickers that we attached to a wall. Those just fell off a couple of weeks after we put them in place.
So, we created our own mural by assembling different pictures of Delicate Arch, Saguaro National Park and Monument Valley. The process actually is quite simple. The three images were manually positioned and scaled and later printed on foil. For the icing on the cake we chose a font that kind of resembles the hieroglyphs from the ancient natives in the US. We then projected the images and the text onto the wall using an overhead projector and traced the contour-lines with a pencil. After that we used different-colored full- and tinting paint for painting. We had to paint it twice so the wall would not shine through the paint any more. The letters actually were quite challenging due to the combination of small size and detail. Fortunately, the font we used is very forgiving so smaller inaccuracies are not really stand out.
We are quite pleased with the result. The mural is a real eyecatcher.

Wir leben nun seit etwa anderthalb Jahren in unserem Haus. Wir haben uns inzwischen eingelebt und haben so ziemlich alles Notwendige im und ums Haus renoviert. Das bedeutet, daß es Zeit ist, ein paar Highlights zu kreieren.
Im Mai 2012 besuchten meine Frau Nicole und ich in die Vereinigten Staaten und ich zeigte ihr viele faszinierende Stellen in Arizona und den angrenzenden Staaten. Wir haben uns in die natürliche Schönheit der Kakteen im Saguaro National Park und der eindrucksvollen Kulisse im Monument Valley verliebt und waren begeistert von den erstaunlichen Bögen im Arches National Park. Natürlich gibt es noch zahllose weitere Beispiele für schöne Plätze.
Wir wollten uns diese Erinnerungen wieder ins Gedächtnis rufen indem wir ein Wandtattoo mit den drei erwähnten Stellen haben. Es gibt ein paar gute Seiten im Internet, aber wir haben nach diesem speziellen Motiv vergeblich gesucht. Weiterhin waren wir nicht sicher, ob ein Wandtattoo überhaupt dauerhaft halten würde, da wir bereits Probleme mit anderen Aufklebern gehabt haben, welche nicht an der Wand festhafteten. Diese fielen nach ein paar Wochen, nachdem wir sie angebracht hatten, einfach ab.
Daher haben wir unser eigenes Wandbild kreiert, indem wir verschiedene Bilder vom Delicate Arch, dem Saguaro National Park und dem Monument Valley zusammengesetzt haben. Die Vorgehensweise ist eigentlich ziemlich simpel. Die drei Bilder wurden manuell positioniert und skaliert und später auf Folie ausgedruckt. Für das Tüpfelchen auf dem i haben wir eine Schriftart genommen, welche ein wenig den Hieroglyphen der historischen Ureinwohner der Vereinigten Staaten ähnelt. Dann projizierten wir die Bilder mit einem Overhead-Projektor an die Wand und haben die Umrisslinien mit einem Bleistift nachgezogen. Danach nutzen wir verschiedenfarbige Voll- und Abtönfarbe zum Ausmalen. Wir mussten zweimal malen, damit die Wandfarbe nicht mehr durchscheint. Die Buchstaben waren ziemlich schwierig aufgrund der Kombination von kleiner Größe und Detail. Zum Glück war die gewählte Schriftart sehr tolerant, sodaß kleinere Ungenauigkeiten nicht wirklich auffallen.
Wir sind vom Ergebnis sehr angetan. Das Wandbild ist ein echter Hingucker.
