Last night, while in the process of starhopping to the galaxy NGC 5557 in Boötes, I stumbled across a nice asterism that caught my attention. Its location is R.A. 14h22m51s and Dec 36°14’42’’. At first sight, using 94x, it looked like a letter “V” made up of five stars. But looking it over, I saw a fainter sixth star at the open side of the “V” and it then quickly reminded me of a diamond, with the faint star at its tip. The whole size of this asterism is some 5’ x 3’.
When looking this asterism up in SIMBAD, I also found a faint galaxy to be located at edge of this asterism (between the “tip” star and the northern end of the “V”). However, I doubt that I can see it with my 18” Dobsonian since the way brighter galaxies NGC 5544 and NGC 5545 (well worth an inspection when being more awake) do not appear overly bright in my scope.
I do not know if this asterism is already a known one – but I certainly do not want to miss the chance of recommending this “object” for the gentle observers.
And, I also learnt something new to me: The constellation Boötes (in German we write Bootes) does not have an umlaut but an indicator (a so-called diaeresis) to show that the two “o”s in the name are pronounced seperately (meaning that I have been mispronouncing this constellation for more that 20 years...).

Letzte Nacht stolperte ich beim Starhopping zur Galaxie NGC5557 im Bootes über einen netten Asterismus, der meine Aufmerksamkeit erhaschte. Die Position ist R.A. 14h22m51s und Dec 36°14’42’’. Auf den ersten Blick sah es bei 94x wie der Buchstabe „V“ aus, welcher aus 5 Sternen besteht. Aber bei genauerem Hinsehen sah ich einen schwächeren sechsten Stern auf der offenen Seite des „V“ und nun erinnerte es mich an einen Diamanten mit einem schwachen Stern auf seiner Spitze. Die Größe dieses Asterismus liegt bei ca. 5’ x 3’.
Als ich den Asterismus in SIMBAD nachgeschaut habe, fand ich auch eine schwache Galaxie, die sich an einer Kante dieses Asterismus befindet (zwischen der „Spitze“ und dem nördlichen Ende des „V“).
Ich bezweifle allerdings, daß ich diese mit meinem 18“ Dobson sehen kann, da die deutlich helleren Galaxien NGC 5544 und NGC 5545 (muß ich mir nochmal genau anschauen, wenn ich wacher bin) in meinem Teleskop nicht übermäßig hell erscheinen.
Ich weiß nicht, ob dieser Asterismus bereits bekannt ist – aber ich mag keinesfalls die Gelegenheit verpassen, dieses „Objekt“ für die geneigten Beobachter zu empfehlen.
Und ich habe auch etwas Neues gelernt: Das Sternbild Bootes (im Englischen schreibt es sich Boötes) wird Bo-otes ausgesprochen, beide „o“s werden also separat betont (was bedeutet, daß ich dieses Sternbild seit über 20 Jahren falsch ausspreche...).
